Why are oceans so important, and crucial to the lives of humans around the world? They help to feed us. They help regulate the climate around us. And they generate most of the oxygen we breathe!
We celebrate the oceans year-round, but especially on June 8, for World Oceans Day. The event is all about participation and coming together as a global community to affect change: “Despite the huge challenges facing the world’s ocean, by working together we can support a healthy ocean that is able to sustainably provide for the billions of humans, plants, and animals that depend on it every day. On World Oceans Day, people around our blue planet celebrate and honor the ocean, which connects us all. Get together with your family, friends, community, and the planet to start creating a better future. Working together, we can and will protect our shared ocean.”
Through EARTHx’s partnership with World Oceans Day, we are working together on an EARTHIKE throughout the country. The concept is simple: go for a walk in your neighborhood, and pick up trash along your trail. Take a picture of what you collect (recycle what you can and throw the rest away), and tag it with the hashtag #EARTHIKE.
The EARTHIKE was just one of the Project D.E.E.P. initiatives focused on preserving our oceans through our new EARTHx organization. We also aligned with The Ocean Project on the need to keep dangerous plastics out of the ocean. Learn more about their World Oceans Day coverage.
