EARTHACK Harnesses the Power of Technology to Solve Environmental Issues

First-ever environmental hackathon debuts at EARTHx to bring technology and real-world environmental issues under one roof

DALLAS (June 12, 2017) – EARTHx, formerly Earth Day Texas, and HackDFW partnered together to debut the first-ever EARTHACK, an environmental hackathon designed to inspire tech-savvy creators to solve real-world issues that can be implemented on a global scale. EARTHACK participants worked around the clock for 36 hours during EARTHx to create 85 environmentally impactful programs & mobile applications, combining technical programming with sustainable solutions.

The three-day hackathon brought together more than 850 information-technology focused participants from local middle schools, high schools, colleges and international universities. The University of Texas at Austin had a major presence at EARTHACK with more than 100 attendees participating in the hackathon. College students in general made up 80 percent of the hackers including undergraduate and graduate students.

Ridr, a ride-sharing mobile application developed to help reduce air pollution, won first place at the EARTHACK competition. Ridr provides users with a transportation network that encourages and rewards people for being good stewards of the environment. Not only did Ridr walk away with the first place title, but they were also recognized for best use of ToyotaConnected’s telemetry data and best use of loT by State Farm.

The innovative projects were judged by a distinguished panel that included: Zack Hicks, CEO, Toyota Connected; Manish Jindal, group vice president, Wireless Charter Communications, Inc.; Chris Stark, head of Business Development, Nokia North America; and Jeff Corkran, experience strategist & designer, eecosphere.

International attendees hailed from Egypt, Mexico and Guatemala, further highlighting the EARTHx mission to bring creative thinkers from all over the world to a space where they can collaborate and discover positive solutions for our planet.

One of HackDFW’s goals is to make the technology space more diverse. The founder of HackDFW, Adam Kila explained, “Our event aims to be inclusive with approximately 20 percent of attendees being female. Bringing diversity into the technology field extends beyond gender as we’re trying to increase female, African-American and Latino attendance at their future events and help change the face of technology.”
