EARTHxPitch Winners’ Projects Focus on Conservation & Sustainability

Innovative competition awards more than $40,000 to winners in Academic, Nonprofit, Civic and Veteran divisions

DALLAS (May 24, 2017) – EARTHx, formerly known as Earth Day Texas, recently announced the 2017 winners of EARTHxPitch competition held in April at Fair Park. The innovative competition awarded cash prizes in recognition of important projects and efforts towards conservation, sustainability and environmental education.

“We are thrilled to partner with these various organizations and support them in their conservation and sustainability projects in our community,” said Rose Mercer, project manager for EARTHxPitch. “It’s exciting to see so many innovative ideas come to light, and throughout this year we will be staying in touch with these selected organizations to see their project’s progress and community impact.”

The 2017 winners include:

Academic Division
Lake Dallas Middle School Ecology Club

Nonprofit Division

Nicaragua Initiative for Community Advancement, Inc.

Civic Division

City of Garland

Veteran Division

Warrior Spirit Project

All four divisions awarded cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to 15,000 to primary and secondary accredited schools, 501(c)(3) education organizations and veterans for their important projects towards conservation, sustainability, and environmental education.

A diverse panel of judges representing city councils, non-profits and academic institutions, selected projects that had a positive environmental impact in the community within one or more of the following focus areas: outdoor learning, healthy lifestyles, conservation & community cleanup and environmental education.

One of the newest additions was the civic division, which focused primarily on promoting the importance of improving pollinator health & habitat in the community, and invited cities that had signed The National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge to compete.

“Given all the bad news these days about the environment, it was heartening and inspiring to read and listen to the proposal by the city of Garland which, in conjunction with several volunteer environmental groups, is expanding its efforts to provide milkweed sites for the endangered Monarch butterflies during their migrations,” said Larry Oliver, English professor at Texas A&M University. “The ‘Monarch Maniac’ signs that participating citizens will post in their yards is a great idea, one that will hopefully encourage others to help save the Monarchs.”
